Launch of the Inaugural Issue of the Folk Music Journal. ''Janashruthi Vimarshana''

The inaugural issue of the first folk music journal published by the Department of Musicology of the Faculty of Music took place on Tuesday the 17^th of December from 3:00 pm onwards at the Dr. Ranjan Abeysinghe Gamut in the premises of the Department of Musicology. Prof. Walter Marasinghe, the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna, Prof. Gamini Senanayake, competent authority Prof. W.M.A. Bandara, Prof. Saman Chandra Ranasinghe, Dr. Praneeth Abeyesundara, Prof. Kolitha Bhanu Dissanayaka, Prof. Kamal Waleboda, Dean of the Faculty of Music, Mr. Chiltas Dayawansha, the Registrar, Mr. Dayawansha, Mr. Mahinda Kumara Dalupotha, Nishshanka Diddenniya were among the prominent faces present at the proceedings that day. The participation and support of the staff and students of the Department of Musicology was appreciated greatly that day. The journal “Janashruthi Vimarshana” is expected to be issues annually. The International Musicology Conference 2019

The International Musicology Conference which was held on the 7th of August 2019 commenced with a dash of colors as shown in the photographs. The event featured many speeches that showcased the importance and various aspects of musicology. The first keynote speech was made by Dr. Gamini Senanayake of the University of Ruhuna on the topic "Indigenous Knowledge and its Impact on Cultural Expressions in Sri Lanka". This was followed by the second keynote speaker Professor Kolitha Bhanu Dissanayake of the University of the Visual and Performing Arts who spoke on the topic "Perception of Musicology through Teleology: Novel Intellectual Outlook". The last keynote address of the day was by Professor Wasantha Priyadarshana who spoke about "Kalukumāra Syndrome (Culture-Specific Syndrome) A Critical Study with Reference to Sri Lankan Cultural Psychology".

Workshop on “Research Abstract’’

With accordance to the 2019 year plan of the Department of Musicology, a workshop for the second, third and final year students who are expected to present their Abstract. The purpose of this workshop is to provide insight into the basics of research, promote research and prepare the students for the research session. Workshop on Music Technology

With accordance to the 2019 Year plan of the Department of musicology, a workshop about Music technology for the second, third and final year students of the department of musicology. The above workshop was held at the Dr. Ranjan Abeysinghe Gamut on 19^th and 20^th of June from 9.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. by visiting lecturer Richard Bandara Nikapitiya. The Objectives of this workshop to gain understanding about the current relevance of Music technology, practice of group activities, motivation in music technology and discussing the need for musicians to pursue this subject.

Head of the department of musicology, Mrs. Iranga Samindani has arranged a workshop for the second, third and final year students of the department of musicology. on 17^th & 18^th  of June from 9.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. at the department of musicology. this workshop was conducted by visiting lecturer Dulanjee Wijesena. The objectives are to provide a basic understanding of yoga practice, to gain practical knowledge on voice training exercises and to develop collaborative efforts among academic. This work will be useful in promoting leadership, qualities, adaptability. Flexibility and communication skills.

Field Visit to the National Museum

The students of the second and third years of the Department of Musicology went on a field trip on the 4th of July 2018 from 1:00 a.m. onwards till about 5:00 p.m. to the National Museum, Colombo 07. This was organized by the subject coordinator, Mrs. Iranga Weerakkody. The students following the subjects evolution of music, folklore studies and research methodology participated in this field visit.

An important feature the students learned was the importance and use of literary and historic sources in studies related to the above. They also observed numerous historical and cultural aspects related to village life and occupations. In addition to this they received the experience of collecting data in the field, how to prepare for a field visit and how to identify the relevant data while in a field visit.

Field Visit About Folklore Studies

The students of the second and third years of the Department of Musicology went on a field trip on the 8th of August 2018 from 12:00 p.m. onwards till about 5:00 p.m. to the Dilmah Conservation Center, Katubedda. This was organized by the subject coordinator, Mrs. Iranga Weerakkody. There they were able to learn about folklore related to trees while observing them as well.

Colours 2018

Colours  2018

“Colours” 2018, a program held with respect to the Music and Reconciliation subject was held on the 21^st of December at the Lionel Edirisinghe Rostrum. Rev. Madampagama Assaji Anunayaka Thero, Rev. Prof. Pallekande Rathanasara Anunayaka Thero, Rev. Madani Maulawi, Bishop of the Methodist Church Rev.  , Dr. Praneeth Abhayasundara, Prof. Asoka De Soysa, Mrs. Ganga Rajinee Dissanayaka, Mr. Nishshanka Diddeniya and other respected individuals participated to this event and expressed their views on the event and the subject matter. An important fact is that the first year students of the Faculty of Music and the second year, third year and final year students of the Department of Musicology as well as students from other departments and faculties participated and helped in this program. Around 150 students participated in a variety of items that displayed the colors of humanity. “Colours” 2018, a concept of the Head of the Department of Musicology, Mrs. Iranga Weerakkody was carried out with the help of temporary lecturers Pavara Navamina, Samitha Rukmal, Rachika De Silva, Sachintha Maduranga and visiting lecturers, Pasindu Chamara, Thanuja Rukshini, Harsha Gamage, Palitha Sri Geeganaarachchige, Isuru Kondasignhe and Prasad Rukshan, along with the students of the Department of Musicology. A special thanking is given to the Vice Chancellor, Senior Prof. Sarath Chandrajeewa, Dean of the Faculty of Music, Mr. Chiltas Dayawansha, the Bursar, Mr. Wanninayaka, the Registrar Mr. B.M. Music and Reconciliation Group Work

Under continuous assessment and with accordance to the strategic plan, as an inaugural step the first year students of the Music and Reconciliation subject participated in this group work. Around 230 students were split into 16 groups and participated in dramas, songs short films and other such activities from the 1st to the 2nd of November, 2018.
